Spelling Bee Anyone?

It’s time for the Wednesday Row80 check-in, I’ll get to that in a moment.  Next week, daughter #2 will be participating in the class Spelling Bee. Hopefully, she will move up to the school bee. She loves the Spelling Bee. She sees it as a personal challenge against the entire class. Even her best friend! She studies her words every night and has stolen her sister’s list of seventh grade words. Daughter #1 purposely fails the class bee. Why?

Flashback to first grade: Daughter #1 made it through the class bee and stood proudly in front of the entire school (k-8). A note on temperament, at this age she was painfully shy and terror was visibly seen in her eyes. The first word was easy. She relaxed a bit. Second round: avenue. She stared at the audience, twirling the hem of her skirt. That was not on her first grade list. Her teacher didn’t tell her she could say she didn’t know the word,  if she didn’t know how to spell it.  She stood there frozen and terrified for what seemed like an eternity. I’m cringing on the edge of my seat, wondering if I can quickly pull her down without anyone noticing. Finally, the speaker asked if she knew the word. She nodded no. A collective breath was released from the audience and everyone clapped. She has never been in a Spelling Bee since.

As you go through your weekend, think of all the kids studying spelling words for the Bee.

  1. My Spelling Bee Story
My one year teacher picked the spelling bee person based on grades. I had the best grade (auto-correct would have protested if it had existed back in the day). I was super honored I was asked, but after thinking about it I knew I’d feel much like daughter one. (Plus no confidence as that was all based on testing well vs spelling well off the cuff.) The boy with the 2nd highest grade went on to get second place. He was beat out by a girl with my birthday who went to nationals twice.

Great job with the goals! 🙂 Keep at them!

  2. I vaguely remember a class spelling bee, but never got quite farther than that, not sure it was fear or I wasn’t the best speller. I was also terribly shy when I was younger. Cheers to your daughter #2 for taking on the challenge.

As for NaNo, my story is coming along. Trying to finish a plot, but I have a nice third of the story written as of today. Going to spend the next two week finishing a plot and my other goals too. Didn’t write over the weekend (Friday and Saturday, so trying to make up for that with today. 🙂 So many ROW80-ers are NaNo, definitely think this year will be a hoot!!

    Have a great week!!

  3. It seems like you’re getting there with your goals. I’m sure you’ll get around to all of them by the end of the round. It is still early days! It is so nice to see that so many of us are participating in Nano this year! Good luck with your goals! Hope the spelling bee went well. 🙂
