Home Stretch

We are in the home stretch of #Row80, only 1 week to go. Time to line up the wandering cats and strap in for one final push. That’s what I’m trying to do. I’ve been busy the last few days. Not too busy to binge-watch season 5 of Call the Midwife. Thankfully, the BBC has much shorter seasons than the US. I will admit to crying during every episode this season. I love it.

This is sleet, not snow.

This is sleet, not snow.

We’ve had a tease of cool weather the last few mornings. Even a nice breeze once or twice during the day. Fall may actually be on its way. I’m so excited. Most people will tell you the deep south doesn’t have real seasons- just blazing hot and not as hot. That’s true. Very few trees turn to shades of yellow and orange, mostly just brown. And that could be a result of drought as much as cooler weather.

My niece is taking a vacation to Canada, she was happy to let me know it has already snowed there. Lucky her. I bet she can build a white snowman, as opposed to the dirt rippled ones we have the joy of making every 8 to 10 years. She’s even going snowboarding. Yes, I’m a tad envious. I wonder if she can box snow and mail it to me. That would be fun.

Our current temperature range is 78* to 90*. I’m dreaming of snow, but I’d be happy with fall. Sigh! I have a can of fake snow. Don’t ask. I’m tempted to mix it up and spread it over the front yard. Maybe use it as a Halloween decoration. On with the goals. Remember to visit the other participants and leave an encouraging word. Row80 is the writing challenge that knows you have a life.

Red highlights were a total failure.

Blue highlights with constant progress strike-through means completed.

Pink highlights are goals I’m dropping. This time, they were dropped because my life is crazy right now and I don’t have time for it.

Green highlights new goals added.

  • Promotion.
Goal- 3 emails a week &/or participate in 3 twitter memes. I sent out a ton of emails for promotion opportunities. I hope to participate more on Twitter this week. I enjoy twitter, much more than Facebook. You can find me @CKRich2
  • Write two posts a week, not related to Row80.  Yes. 1/2.
  • Stay on top of Critique group.  I need to read 3 this week. 1/3 for the week.
  • Edit/revise “Stella” for possible submission to a contest. The deadline is Sept. 30. I need to look over it a bit more.
  • Sort through critique remarks on Dead in the Water.  Goal: 5,000 edited words a week. Set1 (chapters 1-3) completed   Set 2 (chapters 4-5) completed   set 3 (chapters 6-7)  reread the chapters 1-5 I want the first 10 chapters finished by October 5. I’ve looked through all the notes and needed edits for set 3, now I need to complete them. Today, I will work on formatting set 3. It’s a mess.
  • Teach them how to make one meal from start to finish without help.
  • Contact a body at the hardware store to discuss cabinet options and prices.
  • Make a wish list for the kitchen.
  • Plot out a story that popped in my head.  Goal – have a full plot before the end of this round. This has stalled. I did decide to combine two story ideas into one.
  • Free writing at least 3 times a week Nope!
  • Read 4 books a month.
1/4- I am currently reading Lowcountry Book Club by Susan M. Boyer. I’m still reading it. Not sure why it’s taking so long. Oh yeah, Call the Midwife.

Below are the goals completed so far for round 3.

Completed Goals:

  • Empty cabinet under stove for stove installation.
  • Teach my girls how to make a dress
  • Edit/revise “Monster”
  • Edit/revise “Mermaid”
  • Organize my writer’s calendar and mark upcoming due dates and expectations.
  • Buy school supplies and organize all the school stuff.
  • Teach them to properly wash clothes
  • Draw the current kitchen footprint.
  • Create a list of tweets for each story I have out to make promotion easier!
  • Write a new ending for Monster, edit, and revise by September 7.

I have made steady progress, even if it doesn’t look it. Like someone just mentioned, edits and revision (done well) takes time. I’m going to go with that 🙂 If you will excuse me I have to do something with all this gray hair.

How is the start of your week?

  1. As much as I love summer, there’s something to be said for the excitement and energy of autumn. We have beautiful autumns here in Virginia. Hubby and I like to go to a local farm and take a hay ride to pick out our pumpkins, and I’ve already bought part of my Halloween costume (a poodle skirt). It was hard to find something family-friendly. So many of the costumes are meant for parties, not handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, but I’m hoping the skirt fits and I can pull off the 1950s look.

    Good progress! Congrats! 🙂

    • We have the same issue with Halloween costumes. My girls want to be super heroes, but most are inappropriate for their age. We usually end up making modifications. A poodle skirt sounds like fun, as does the hay ride. Enjoy fall.

  2. My daughter and I stopped by the fabric store yesterday to look for things for her costume. She’s going to be one of the Crystal Gems from Steven Universe. There were some leaves underfoot, and there’s a chill in the air tonight.

My week began with sorrow…our dog died of a swift cancer. Writing’s been difficult with the loss of our old friend…but I’m remembering nine and a half good years, and relieved that his illness is over.

      • Crystal Gems are the aliens in Steven Universe, a Cartoon Network show my daughter loves. We don’t get Cartoon Network, but Amazon gets the new episodes pretty quickly, and she usually buys them there.

She decided not to do a Gem costume, because it’s more effort than she’d like to go through right now. Instead, she’s currently thinking she’ll be Chara from the Undertale game, because she basically wears everyday clothes, and her hair is the same color.

      • Forgot to say thank you for your Corki condolences. We’re adjusting, but he was just such a sweet guy, his absence is keenly felt by all of us, even my Accomplice, who isn’t especially an animal guy.

  3. So jealous. I wish I was looking forward to 75 degree weather instead of 40 below in the next few months. I would give up winters in the northwoods in a heartbeat if there was anyway financially and family-wise that I could do it. Not, not, I repeat not looking forward to snow or cold in the next month or two!

  4. Being only in the sort of South (Northwest Arkansas) I’m in no rush for winter. It is welcome to arrive as fashionably late as it wishes and if it decides to leave early for a better party in your area, I certainly won’t be offended. 🙂
