or The art of juggling while jumping up and down on a pogo stick
We’re now three months into 2017. As usual, some of my goals are falling apart. It’s not because I lack motivation or desire. Mostly, it’s from my inability to multitask or balance the different segments of my life.
Take today as an example. My plan was to complete the following tasks: write, walk, edit. Short and sweet. But I forgot that I have to make an exchange at the mall and return books to the library. My youngest also forgot school clothes so I have to run those up to the school. I need to buy gas and pay bills. Don’t get me started on the housekeeping chores.
Finding balance with family, work, and writing is hard enough but throw exercise into the mix and watch out. It gets crazy. I prefer to write first thing in the morning (like right now) and I can edit after lunch. But when do I exercise? I prefer to go for a walk as early as possible before it gets hot but that’s prime writing time. I can walk at the mall but that usually leads to hours of wasted time looking around and people watching. So yesterday, I tried Tai Chi. That was interesting. It didn’t take all day and was low impact. I can squeeze it into small pockets of time between other things.
I need to go back to my schedule and rework it to include exercise. And wiggle room for stuff my family throws at me.

At the end of this round (March 22) I will reevaluate my goals and add new ones.
- Write 200,000 words. Not a single word. I’m making a weekly goal of 5,000 words to help reach my yearly goal. That gives me 8,978words written this year.
- Edit 600 pages. I edited 10 pages of Camouflage. It’s a novella of around 25,000 words. The yearly total is 257/600 pages.
- Walk 2,600,000 steps.
I walked 2.8 miles this week a total of 41,052 steps for the week and 341,445 /2.6 million for the year. I left my pedometer home more than once. I also tried Tai Chi once this week. That was fun. I felt like a heron but with much less grace. My weekly goal is 50,000 steps.
- Read 80 books. I finished Caraval by Stephanie Garber. It’s an interesting YA read. Strong overtones of Alice in Wonderland. I also skimmed through theThe Positive Trait Thesaurus and The Urban Setting Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi. I’m not including them in my number of books read. I just started If I Stay by Gayle Firman and I’m still reading Beautiful Creatures. Completed 14/80 books this year.
- Find the shipwreck at Ft. Morgan. This is a goal for summer so, check back later.
So there you go. Not a total bust but not a great success either.
