20 Books of Summer 2018

Thank you 746 Books for hosting this challenge.

20 books

Surf over to Cathy at 746 Books to find out more about this reading challenge. Basically, from June 1 to September 3 I will read 20 books. That’s a hair more than my goal of four per month. It’s summer. What else do I have to do? Funny you should ask πŸ˜‰ I am working part-time. I’m not sure how that will go, especially with the teenagers I live with.

With this challenge, I hope to fill in some of the missing books for the Mother-Daughter reading Challenge, as well as push the boundaries on my usual reads. As always, I reserve the right to change books as my mood changes. Books I plan to read this summer πŸ™‚

  1. Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

I know I read this in high school but I wish to try again. I also have to read a play for the Mother-Daughter Reading Challenge, so two birds. I scored a great version of Hamlet at the library book sale. On the left hand side is the original text and on the right it is translated into modern English πŸ˜‰

2. Shades of Earl Gray by Laura Childs

This is book 2 in the Tea Shop Cozy Mystery Series. I’m not sure how I’ve missed this one. My goal is to read every book in the series. because I love them. This will also cover a murder mystery needed for the Mother-Daughter Reading Challenge

3. Dracula by Bram Stoker

I don’t read horror. Yes, this is a classic. I figured summer would be the best time to read it. I also found this really cool version where the pictures move on my kindle. I’m a nerd. This fulfills the books I don’t normally read requirement. I’ve also seen the movie. Either one works.

4. Change of Fortune by Jana Deleon

Book 11 in the series! Obviously, I love this series. It’s also a hoot. This counts as my comedy.

5. Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban (Illustrated Edition) by J.K. Rowling

My least favorite of the series but now I have this beautiful edition with pictures πŸ™‚

6. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

My daughter said I had to read it. Question: Do I have to read the prequel first? I don’t want to but daughter is adamant that I do.

7. Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur

It’s not summer without a graphic novel. The cover is adorable.

8. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I can’t watch the movie until I read the book. It’s pretty fat too.

9. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

This meets the challenge of a sci-fi book turned TV show. I’ve wanted to read it, might as well this summer.

10. A Tropic of Serpents by Marie Brennan

I’m pretty sure dragons count as reading a book about animals πŸ™‚

11. Florida Roadkill by Tim Dorsey

I’ve never read a Dorsey book but seems like a good book to read in summer. It’s also book 1 in the series. It took a while to find it. I have 3 or 4 in print but they are way down the series list.

12. The Marmalade Murders by Elizabeth J. Duncan

I received this from a GoodReads giveaway and want to read it soon.

13. Vamparazzi by Laura Resnick

Working my way through this series.

14. Blade Runner by Phillip K. Dick

<sigh> I’ve never watched the movie or read the book. I’m not a huge fan of sci-fi but I’m trying to broaden my horizons. I didn’t know the original title was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Mind blown.

15.Β  Cry of the Sea by D. G. Driver

What is summer without a mermaid book?

16. My Diary from the Edge of the World by Jodi Lynn Andrews

This has been on my shelf for over a year. Time to read it.

17. Shark’s Tooth by Michael Guillebeau

I’m not really sure what this book is about but the title is awesome. Sounds like a summer book.

18. Whiskey Sour by J.A. Konrath

There are 4 from this series on my kindle but I haven’t read a single book. Time to remedy that.

19. Kingdom of Ashes by Elena May

Another book I won from a GoodReads I need to read.

20. Hook by K.R. Thompson

Again I know nothing. I assume it’s about the Capt. Hook from Peter Pan. There’s a ship on the cover.

20 Books of Summer TBR

  • Tomorrow When the War Began- John Marsden
    Loved it.
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them– J.K. Rowling- just like the movie, very quick read
  • Beach Town– Mary Kay Andrews DNF This is the only Mary Kay Andrews book I didn’t finish. I could not get into it.
  • Weeki Wachee Springs- Maryan and Dan Pelland Great bit of Florida roadside fun.
  • Wandering Island– Kenji Tsuruta
Fun little book. Especially after I got the hang of reading the blocks in the correct order.
  • Must Love Chainmail– Angela Quarles
not my ususal genre to read but I enjoyed the timetravel aspect and the characters. fun read
  • The Elfstones of Shannara– Terry Brooks

surprisingly fast paced but felt a bit excessive like an 80s teen movie.
  • Wicked Mobile – Brendan Kirby
  • The Princess Diaries– Meg Cabot
Loved it. Totally different than the movie.
  • The Shores of Spain– J. Kathleen Cheney Great book. It was not what I expected. I flet like it centered more on other characters and not the original pair.

this was an interesting book with an unusual format
  • Unsympathetic Magic– Laura Resnick
not as good as the other 3 I’ve read in the series.

DNF my e-copy was badly formatted, making it annoying to read
  • This old Homicide– Kate Carlisle
  • Fixin to Die– Tonya Kappes
    fun southern mystery
  • Bitter Harvest– Wendy Tyson
entertaining but not sure I will continue the series
