March 2017 TBR Final

I’ve had a busy month. Spring  Summer seems to be in full swing here. I’ve ordered the girls each a box from Owlcrate for Easter. They are so excited. I’ve been chipping away at my reading list, acquiring books for summer reading. Apparently, I wanted to read one book so bad I bought it twice 🙂 I haven’t accomplished much writing but I have been busy submitting my work to publishers, agents, and magazines. So that is something.

My books:

  • Caraval by Stephanie Garber- I enjoyed this, it’s a beautiful book, but I don’t know if I like it enough to read the next one.
  • The Positive Trait Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi
  • The Urban Setting Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi. I skimmed through both of these. I’m not counting them as true reads.
  • Body Trauma by David W. Page, MD. I read the introduction and first chapter before I moved this to my research shelf. It’s a bit dry but will make a great resource when writing scene’s involving death and/or injury. Not including it in my reading count.
  • The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin. I read this in one sitting. Tiny little read with beautiful illustrations. Hated the ending. But a nice read.
  • Out of the Silent Planet Book 1 of the Space Trilogy by C.S.Lewis. I tried to read it I really did. I love C.S. Lewis but I could not get through this. I may try again later.

Library Books:

  • Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Didn’t finish.
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman I enjoyed it more than expected but not enough to read more of the series.

Kindle Books:

  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia. I loved it. Is that wrong? I knew the voice, it’s so Southern. I swear I grew up in that little town.
  • Auntie Mamie by Patrick Dennis. Again, I tried and failed. It just “read” so dated. That’s my issue with most older fiction– it’s old.

WOW! I actually tackled every book on my list. That’s a new record!

Books also read:

  • Double Strike by Gretchen Archer If you have not read a Davis Way Caper give it a go. It is crazy funny.
  • Double Jinx  by Gretchen Archer– a short story
  • Blubber by Judy Blume — this was my selection for a banned book. I borrowed it from the library and someone went through and blacked out the curse words. So I guess it was banned and censored 😉
  • The Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. This was my selection for a book recommended by a librarian. I really enjoyed it, the book is written similar to an autobiography. It was different, I’ll look into reading the next two in the series.
  • Pillow Stalk (Madison Night Mystery #1) by Diane Vallere. I received this book through a giveaway with Henery Press. I’ve had my eye on this book for a while. Women who look like Doris Day are being murdered in present-day Dallas! The book is dotted with names and references from the film Pillow Talk. I remember watching that movie as a kid. I loved it. And let’s face it, Rock Hudson is still dreamy.

That’s 9 books this month with a total of 22 out of 80 for the year.  I think my favorite book was Pillow Stalk. I just really enjoyed the characters and the mystery.

March TBR 2017

It’s March already? Wow. Mardi Gras has totally messed up my calendar. I read more than I expected in February. I also bought more books than necessary 🙂 Most of my TBR this month is from my bookshelf. I need to thin the herd.

March TBR

This month I hope to read for enjoyment and education. Several of these will be toward the Mother-Daughter Reading Challenge. I have a weird mix of books:

dscf4116

My books:

  • Caraval by Stephanie Garber- I have to read this before it disappears into my children’s bookshelf never to be seen again.
  • The Positive Trait Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi
  • The Urban Setting Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi. I’m only one book short from having the entire set.
  • Body Trauma by David W. Page, MD. I’m am terribly excited to read this.
  • The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin. It has pictures 🙂
  • Out of the Silent Planet Book 1 of the Space Trilogy by C.S.Lewis. I didn’t even know he had a space series.

Library Books:

  • Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Can’t wait to read this.
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Kindle Books:

  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia. I’ve already started this one. I love the voice. So far it’s better than expected.
  • Auntie Mamie by Patrick Dennis. I started this in February and need to finish.

There’s no theme to the books and looking at them there appears to be no reason 😉 It’s a long list, but several are very small books. There’s even a few I need want to order because I can’t find them local. Once summer is here I will only read from my bookshelf and the library. That’s the other thing about Mardi Gras. The library closes for like three days. Sigh!

What’s on your TBR?

March TBR – Final

Where did March go? It has blown by. I’ve been busy writing, plotting, and editing. When I’m actively writing I tend to neglect the blog and social media, I can’t do both. But good things are coming.  I didn’t read as much from my list as I thought I would. DNF means I did not finish the book. The up side is I found new writers and series that I like and plan to read more of.

My reading goal was a book a week. I have read 22/52.

Library Books

  • Catwings, a catwings tale by Ursula Le Guin.  It was maybe a 15 minute read. Short and sweet kids book.
  • Dragons at Crumbling Castle by Terry Pratchett. I just like the cover. A dragon in the tub reading a book.
  • House of the Rising Sun by Kristen Painter.
  • Charming by Elliot James.
this was dark and funny all at the same time and I loved it. At one point, it did keep me up at night. These vampires are creepy!

Kindle Books

  • Everblue, Mer Tales Book 1 by Brenda Pandos. DNF- This could have been better I think it was a bit too juvenile, even though it’s labeled YA. Totally lost me at the “sea inspired” sayings and bead/shell encrusted bikini tops.
  • Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. I’m seeing a theme here.
  • The Lucky Cat, Black Cat Vol. 1 by Lisa Shea. This was a very quick read. It’s closer to a short story. Apparently, Shea wrote a story a day and published them separately. The goal was to raise money for a battered woman’s shelter. Interesting idea. I would have liked a little more.
  • How to Write Dazzling Dialogue by James Scott Bell
    It was okay.
  • Soldiers of Fortune by Jana Deleon This is book 6 in the Miss Fortune Series. Currently there are only 7 books. If she doesn’t write another book, I will be sad.

Books read while ignoring my TBR stack:

  • Sweet Tea Revenge (a Tea Shop Mystery) – Laura Childs. Actually it’s #14 in the series. Loved it. It was a nice refreshing cozy after reading so many fantasy books.
  • The Mermaid’s Sister – Carrie Ann Noble. It’s hard to find a good mermaid book. This was a really good one. Unique and imaginative.
  • All Dressed in White- Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke. It’s really good and a fast read.
  • Stardust– Neil Gaiman. I am ashamed to admit, I saw the movie a year ago and didn’t realize it was from a book. I loved the book. Adored it to the point that I must buy a copy. I borrowed mine from the library. The writing is beautiful. I found myself limiting the amount I could read at a time, because I didn’t want to finish it. I wanted to savor it.

My favorite was Stardust. I loved his writing style and have ordered another book of Neil Gaiman, can’t wait to read it.

March TBR

Spring is in the air. I can feel it, I even  pulled out my flip-flops today. The flowers are blooming and the cat is shedding. Both are signs of spring. Along with the red, itchy eyes! I’m tired of winter and beyond ready for warmer weather.

I have a huge stack of books to read this month. I don’t know if I’ll make it through all of them, but I will do my best.

Library Books

  • Catwings, a catwings tale by Ursula Le Guin. My daughter found this on Goodreads and had to read it. Then she passed it on to me and told me to read it. It’s a tiny little book, shouldn’t take an hour to read.
  • Dragons at Crumbling Castle by Terry Pratchett. I just like the cover. A dragon in the tub reading a book.
  • House of the Rising Sun by Kristen Painter.
  • Charming by Elliot James.

Kindle Books

  • Everblue, Mer Tales Book 1 by Brenda Pandos. I’ve had mermaids on my mind so I’m finally getting around to reading this one.
  • Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. I’m seeing a theme here.
  • The Lucky Cat, Black Cat Vol. 1 by Lisa Shea
  • How to Write Dazzling Dialogue by James Scott Bell
  • Soldiers of Fortune by Jana Deleon This is book 6 in the Miss Fortune Series. Currently there are only 7 books. If she doesn’t write another book, I will be sad.

It’s hard to decide which I should read first. I’m thinking Catwings, since it’s tiny and then maybe the dragon book.
